A Life Well Lived

This blog started out to be a collection of past favorite images; but as I sorted through the hundreds of images I ran across this photograph of Mimi Jones, from her daughter Judith's recent wedding.

A few weeks ago Mimi went home to be with the Lord. This woman was remarkable in her joy, peace, loving nature and trust in Jesus.

Seeing this photo reminds me to thank God for living in people like Mimi, who are His hands and feet; tangible reminders of His consistent love.

Of Friends and Photographs

Value is an odd thing. It can be subjective and objective - or both.

Take cars for example. When a new one first hits the market its dollar value is specific (unless you're really good at haggling a dealer), then a few years later it has a value range depending on condition...which is then, again, subjective.

What about friendship though? Today I learned that it has a very high value, a value we often underestimate.

After getting half way through dinner prep I realized I forgot a key ingredient: peas. Stove burning, pot boiling, husband working late...and now I have to get peas while the stove's going or wait a bit and leave a half cooked dinner cooling. So on my way downstairs I popped my head in our neighbors Dan and Luann to say hi as I ran to the nearest Ralph's (Trader Joe's doesn't have canned peas you see). After a minute of chit chat they asked where I was off to - half way through my elaborate explanation of the delicacies that is Tuna Casserole out comes Dan with a can of early peas; just what I needed.

How is this like photographs, you're probably wondering by now. With the quick like ninja speed and nearly error-proof photography at everyone's fingertips good photography is fast loosing it's distinction as an art of recording history. Many people now expect to pay a little and get a lot; and often they're tricked into thinking they got it with all the people jumping into being "photographers" and giving away their images for nothing.

The value of a photograph is often left unrealized until the moment it matters most - at the passing of a loved one; when a grandparent thumbs through volumes of history with their grandchildren. Just as we take friends for granted until we need them, we have begun to stake the responsibility of our memories into the hands of hobbyists.

A clarification: every photographer has to start somewhere, so give room to let people grow in their abilities. However, deception of professionalism is an unfortunate reality we must begin to acknowledge.

Amazing Change Sunday

Today our church took part in the Amazing Change Sunday - the follow up to Amazing Grace Sunday, the 200th anniversary to the end of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade - and it blew me away.

At winter camp the previous weekend our speaker, Glenn Prior, talked about the Tabernacle (don't worry, I didn't understand what it was prior to his teaching on it, either) and how we must face our sin before we can draw in to God. It was powerful.

So, not expecting to relate much from the previous weekend into today's teaching I was floored when Pastor Jim dove head-on into how sin, or piousness (which is the hypocrisy of putting religion above relationship), keeps us separated from God and is what inspired His rebuke to the Israelite's in Isaiah 58.

Connection, please?

Basically, the Israelites were sinning in that they appeared to be holy, but weren't taking care of those who desperately needed it, like the poor or disadvantaged.

Translation to today: when Christians shy away from being the hands and feet of Christ to our communities we're being the same pious people the Israelites later repented from being.

Without a mode for action all this info can be overwhelming and leave you feeling helpless to change. Luckily our pastors are awesome and provided so many resources for us to be the hands and feet of Christ. Here are a few...

Winter Camp at Pine Summit

So I think I've almost recovered...almost.

We had an amazing Winter Camp with our students up at Pine Summit. Dominique, Corey, James, Jonathan, Altone, Dante, "Thirsty" Thurston, Rodrick, Matt, Daniel, Nick, Campbell, Maddie, Brianna and Mishell came with us for our first year away from our home camp at Oak Glenn. These students were SO great to be with because you can see they're beginning to really seek God and His love is shining through them. The guys even did table duty for the girls one morning!

SUSHI leaders, we couldn't do it without you! Thank you for your love, support and leadership.

Check out the River Church website for a link to info on our youth group's web site, called SUSHI (serving under the Savior's heavenly influence).

A few of my favorite shots from the weekend, from my Hasselblad 500c. (T-B: Nick, Matt, "the girls," Heather, most of the group, my hubbie Matt, and Jordan).
